Electricity Taxes and Surcharges

Day-ahead electricity prices are market prices. Real bills often include extra charges and taxes, so WattSmart lets you adjust prices to better match the numbers you actually pay.

What changes when the feature is enabled

With Taxes & Surcharges enabled, WattSmart recalculates the prices shown across the app using your settings. This is especially useful when you plan energy usage based on final price, not the raw exchange value.

Calculation order

WattSmart applies adjustments in this sequence:

  1. Add the fixed surcharge to the base day-ahead price
  2. Apply the percentage tax to the result

In simple form:

Final price = (Base price + Surcharge) × (1 + Tax%)

Settings you can control

Fixed surcharge

A constant markup added to every displayed price value.
Use it for network-related add-ons or any per-kWh surcharge you want included in your planning.

Percentage tax (VAT by default)

The tax is set to the VAT rate of the selected country by default, but you can change it anytime.

  • Adjust it with a slider
  • Useful if your effective rate differs from the default VAT or you want to model a different scenario

When to turn it on

  • You want price graphs and tables that feel closer to your real costs
  • You compare “cheap vs expensive” intervals using a more realistic final price
  • You prefer one consistent adjustment applied everywhere instead of doing the math manually
